In men, the male hormone testosterone affects the metabolism and DHT in hair follicles. Increased levels of DHT have been shown to bind to the male hormone receptor sites. These then interfere with the normal functioning of hair follicles. These hair follicles then cause a gradual, progressive shrinkage in the length and calibre of hair follicles. Certain herbs are believed to help rebalance the hormonal imbalance and in this way help the metabolism in the follicles.
Hair itself is dead. However, it grows from hair follicles which are very much alive. Follicles are unevenly spread in the scalp – usually in groups of two to five. Each follicle has its own life cycle. These follicles need regular amounts of certain nutrients for making protein as hair is after all, 97% protein.
